Kids Clay
(kids ages 6–12 years)
Tentative Opening June 7th
Registration deadline June 1st.
Physical distancing practices mandated.
Course Description
Kids are guided through the process of working with clay by learning the fundamentals in hand-building – coiling, pinching, building with slabs and sculpting. Students are given step-by-step instruction through each project where their creativity and their own creative vision can take hold. Projects cover both sculptural and functional works of art and are specifically tailored to encourage each student’s individuality and expression through clay as a medium.
Please note that Kids Clay is a class in which children are dropped off and picked up after class. After many years of teaching, we’ve found that children are less in inhibited creatively when they are not being watched by parents or other family members. Thank you for understanding! We look forward to meeting and working with your children while they explore the wonderful world of making pottery and their own ceramic art.

Kids Clay FAQs
Is there anything I need to know to help prep my child for class?
Kids should arrive dressed in comfortable clothes and wear closed-toe shoes. While the clay we use won’t leave permanent stains, we advise that you select something they can wear that they (and you) don’t mind getting dirty. Also, if your child has long hair, it’s very important that you make sure s/he has an elastic band they can use to pull it back and short, trimmed nails which are best for handling clay.
Will their pieces be food-safe once complete?
Yes. We only use glazes that are food-safe.
When will my child’s artwork be ready?
All work goes through two kiln firings. The first is bisque firing and the second is glaze firing. The last two sessions of every class are dedicated to applying glaze. Once the work has been glaze fired, it makes the pottery safe for food and drinks. A pickup date will be provided after the term ends once all the work has been glaze fired.
What happens if my child’s work gets damaged at the studio?
Due to the nature of clay, sometimes things happen during the drying process or while in the kiln which are beyond our control.
What happens to my child’s pieces if we forget to pick them up?
We will arrange a time for you to pick up your child’s work. Any unclaimed pieces not claimed after 15 days will be donated to charity. Thank you for understanding as we have limitations in storage at the studio.
Is there any open studio time available for kids enrolled in class?
Open studio sessions are available to enrolled adult students only due to supervision limitations.
What if my child misses a class, can it be made up?
No, we cannot offer make-up or drop-in classes. Our policy for this is the same for all enrolled students, regardless of circumstance. We encourage you to visit our general FAQs page for more detail regarding studio policies that apply to all our classes and workshops.
